Corsicana, TX – Navarro College announces the addition of esports across the district for fall 2020. The esports industry is larger than the movie and music industry combined and will allow Navarro College to be on the forefront of higher ed adoption and integration. The Corsicana campus will have a NJCAA sponsored competitive collegiate team that will compete in games similar to other athletic teams. The Navarro College-Waxahachie, Navarro College-Midlothian and Navarro College-Mexia locations will all have club esports teams that will compete on a recreational level. Across the district, Navarro College will have career tracks that support the esports industry.
To support the league, Raven White has been named to the newly created Esports Head Coach position. White is currently the Director and Head Coach of Esports at Missouri Valley College. He has been involved with gaming since his childhood and is excited to join Navarro College and create a premiere program. “Esports is larger than just gaming. This program will create a multitude of opportunities for our students academically and with career options throughout the industry. We are so excited that Raven has been selected to lead our program. He has the experience, knowledge and passion to help us build a nationally recognized program that will excel in all facets,” said Athletic Director Michael Landers.
Navarro College esports is utilizing funds donated from Community National Bank and Trust of Texas and the Navarro College Foundation to underwrite the program launch. Two classrooms in the Computer Science Building at the Navarro College-Corsicana location will be renovated to become the Navarro ESPORTS Complex where there will be competition rooms with state-of-the-art gaming equipment, shoutcast and streaming booths, and a common area where people can come and watch the competition on monitors.
“I would like to thank Community National Bank and the Navarro College Foundation for their support and investing in the startup of this program,” said Dr. Kevin G. Fegan, Navarro College District President. “The vision of Navarro College is to be nationally recognized as a higher education institution committed to providing innovative career pathways and student-centered learning opportunities.. The esports program is future-oriented and positions Navarro College to be a leader in this arena locally and globally.”
