Bacterial Meningitis Information -- For all new, incoming students who will reside in campus housing. Please read!
The Texas Legislature mandates that all public institutions of higher education require all new, incoming students who will reside in campus housing to be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis at least 10 days prior to moving into campus housing.
Bacterial meningitis is a serious, potentially deadly condition that can progress extremely fast; therefore, utmost precautions must be taken. The condition causes inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. The bacteria that cause meningitis can also infect the blood. This condition strikes about 3,000 Americans each year, including 100-125 on college campuses, leading to 5-15 deaths among students each year. There is treatment, but those who survive may develop severe health problems and/or disabilities.
