In order to help prepare international students for success in college, Navarro College offers four courses especially designed for non-native English speakers. An international student who is required to take Developmental Reading 1071, Developmental Reading 1072, Developmental Writing 1071, or Developmental Writing 1072 has the option to take any of these courses in a special ESOL section. These courses fulfill the developmental requirements and are taught with non-native English speakers as the focus group. Following are descriptions of these courses.
WRIT 1071 ESOL – Writing Skills I for Non-Native English Speakers
3 lec/1 lab (3 NDCr.)
Course for speakers of other languages designed to teach basic English language writing skills. It reviews the fundamentals of grammar and teaches the basics of writing paragraphs and short essays. Prepares students to function in college classes that require written English language proficiency. Prerequisite: Non-native English speaker whose THEA score (or approved alternative test) indicates that the student should be placed in Developmental Writing 1071.

Designed for non-native English speakers who need Developmental Writing 1072.
READ 1071 ESOL – Reading and Study Skills I for Non-Native English Speakers
(3 lec/1 lab (3 NDCr.)

Navarro College proudly serves international student from 52 countries. These students play an integral role in the campus community, especially through clubs and organizations, like the International Student Organization and Student Government Association. International students are also recognized for their academic endeavors. Many are members of national honor societies like Phi Theta Kappa and Psi Beta. Often students are recognized in Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. Navarro students who complete their Associate's Degree consisting of core coursework may also transfer successfully to four-year universities.
